Dos Hombres Mezcal, Dos (two), and Hombres (men) co-founded by the well-known co-stars of the crime drama television series Breaking Bad, Bryan Cranston, and Aaron Paul.
Since their venture started Dos Hombres Mezcal has been honored across the globe as an award-winning drink.
Only the most superb Agave Angustifolia, more commonly known as Espadín agave are hand-picked from the hillsides nestled in a small village of Oaxaca, Mexico.
Oaxaca is not just known for its Mezcal, but also for its magnificent archaeological landmark Monte Albán which used to be a functioning city.
What is the history of Dos Hombres Mezcal?
Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston were not just co-stars in a television series, they also started to build a lifelong friendship that evolved into the exquisiteness of Dos Hombres Mezcal, an Oaxacan mezcal.
“Two guys on a quest” is what Cranston and Paul would describe themselves.
Their journey spanned over 3 years with the voyage dedicated to finding the “Best mezcal they have ever tasted”.
They found the recipe they were searching for; it came from the hands of Gregorio Velasco a third generational Mezcal Maestro whose lineage backs to multiple generations of making mezcal.
Mezcal’s considered of artisan origin and made from over thirty different agave species in regions of Mexico, it is a contrast to tequila made from blue agave. As Aaron Paul refers to mezcal “It feels like the more, established, mature older relative of tequila.”
The origins of mezcal date back to the 16th century. There are three different mezcal varieties standard mezcal, mezcal artesanal and mezcal ancestral.
The mezcal standard is seen as the industrial method which adheres to the bare minimum requirements to make certified mezcal. The standard method does not really produce authentic mezcal, but its convenience lies in its industrial-scale production of it.
Dos Hombres Mezcal is a mezcal artesanal which means they adhere to the more traditional way. A Method that prohibits the newer tools and techniques applied to standard mezcal.
Mezcal ancestral follows the strictest rules and will reflect in pricing. There should not be much of a difference though between a superior quality artisanal mezcal and a regular ancestral mezcal.
Dos Hombres Mezcal Espadín is a 6-year-old Espadín agave that engages the palate with scents and flavors of smooth smoke, wood, apple, mango, and a local fruit known as “zapote” a soft edible fruit.
Dos Hombres Tobala is a limited edition currently available made from a 25-year-old Tobala agave that has striking bold notes.
The bold notes derive from the copal trees in the region which impregnate and perfumes the soil where the Tobala agave grows.
The people use copal to purify and bless the environment making copal sacred to them. The aromas of roasted chocolate, hints of lilies, and the hidden freshness with a subtle sweetness of fruit scents arise. Flavors of wood and smooth smoke entice another sip.

Their distinctive limited edition Tobala Mezcal is a Tobala (Agave potatorum) grown and nurtured for 25 years before harvesting. The process of harvesting and making Dos Hombres Mezcal is a near exact art form.
There are five essential steps that need to go into making Dos Hombres Mezcal.
Harvesting and cooking
The leaves of the agave plant are cut off in the fields and the plant’s piña is dug up chopped into quarters and moved to earthen cooking pits.
They are covered with hot stones and soil, and after four days of baking in the earthen pits, the agave’s natural sugars are brought out.
Milling
The sweet fruit is then transported to an above-ground pit where a donkey traditional to the artisanal variation pulls a stone wheel that breaks down the cooked agave into a mash.
Fermentation
Once the milling process is completed, the mash is placed into tubs with spring water to ferment for 7-10 days. The mash then becomes a “tepache”.
Distillation
The tepache is loaded in copper stills heated to an exact temperature and checked carefully over the next 2 days in a basin resulting in a smooth Mezcal.
